When to Call an Electrician to Your Home

When trying to decide if you should undertake electrical repairs in your home or call an electrician for help, you can begin at your local hardware or home improvement store. Most often the sales staff at these stores is very knowledgeable in the field and know exactly what the job entails and will tell you whether or not you should do the repair yourself.

Another way to determine if you can handle the task at hand is to do a bit of research. There are many do-it-yourself electrical repair books available that can walk you through some of the most common electrical repair procedures. If you consider yourself to be a handy person and if you have carried out the same type of repair yourself in the past, then you can certainly save yourself a considerable amount of money by fixing the problem yourself. Also, if the repair needed is rather straight-forward and one that is visible and does not require that you remove portions of wall or ceilings then perhaps you can handle the job.

However, if the professionals at the hardware store have advised you to call in an electrician, then you should heed this advice. Many electrical repair jobs require that special tools be used and electricians are trained and certified to handle these tools. Some problems require that you should always call an electrician, such as in the case that you are regularly resetting circuit breakers or changing fuses too often. Also, if the lights dim in your house whenever you turn on an appliance such as an air conditioner or dish washer, you should seek professional help. If you notice your lights flickering quite regularly, this is also a sign that an electrician should be called. And of course, if you detect the smell of hot wires in your home, you should not hesitate to call in a professional and quickly.

Word-of-mouth is a great way to hire an electrician so be sure to ask friends, family and co-workers for recommendations. When hiring an electrician, be sure to find one that has been in business for at least a couple of years. You should ask for references and be sure that the electrician is fully certified and licensed. Do not be afraid to check the references so that you can determine if the work was completed satisfactory and on time.

You may very well be a great do-it-yourselfer around the house but you should never hesitate to call in a professional electrician if the task is risky or potentially dangerous to you and your house. Remember that your home’s electrical system is complicated and that it can be extremely hazardous if not handled properly.
